WPU creates students interested in community engagement. Community service has proven time and again to increase, not distract, from the lessons learned in the classroom.

HAPPY CONSTITUTION DAY!!!!!
On September 17, 1787, the delegates to the Constitutional Convention met for the last time to sign the document they had created. We encourage all Americans to observe this important day in our nation's history by attending local events in your area. Celebrate Constitution Day through activities, learning, parades and demonstrations of our Love for the United State of America and the Blessings of Freedom Our Founding Fathers secured for us.

New Partnerships and Opportunities for 2017-2018
Pacers!
We've got some great new partnership and opportunities
Here are few!
Student Veterans of American- SVA is looking to start a chapter here at WPU. The heart of SVA is the student-led chapter. SVA supports a network of over 1,300 schools and over 500,000 student veterans. At the individual level, SVA empowers veterans to be informed consumers of higher education and make the most of the transition to civilian life.
I Support The Girls- Support the Girls collects and distributes donations of new/used bras and new sealed packages of tampons and maxi pads to homeless women and girls across North America (and in 4 locations worldwide). We would love to start a chapter here at WPU and be the first in Raleigh!
Inter-Faith Food Shuttle- programs Feed, Teach & Grow to connect families to nutritious food and develop skills for self-sufficiency -- breaking the cycle of hunger. Together as a community, we are pioneering innovative, transformative solutions to end hunger. We already have several events scheduled with Inter-Faith and are excited about their great work!

Access Culture: Student-Centricity and Supporting Underserved Populations
To meet the 60-percent attainment goal, institutions must look beyond their traditional audiences and find ways to adequately serve demographics not traditionally focused on by colleges and universities—but it takes more than just opening the door to helping these learners succeed.

Stanley McChrystal: Every American Should Serve For One Year
Read HERE
"America needs a restart. It has long devoted its energies to solving its many big problems — unequal opportunity, crumbling infrastructure, lagging education, inadequate training in a changing economy and threats to peace around the world. But it has done so with tired methods. Simply doing more or less of what we have done in the past will not fix what the United States faces. Every solution requires more than another budget negotiation or Facebook post. Each also requires trust and consensus — the hard and disappearing work of democracy."
Questions
1) Who is General Stanley McChrystal and why does he have the right to say people have to serve?
2) What advantages do you see in this? What disadvantages?
3) General McChrystal says the work has been "done so with tired methods," the programs he's suggesting seem like the same things we're doing now (tutoring, skill retraining, etc). Do you agree, yes or no? Why?
4) Perfect world: Congress does the work that General McChrystal suggests, you're tapped to be the "volunteer czar."
a) How do you manage this influx of volunteers?
b) What programs or initiatives do you focus on?
c) What results do you want from each of the initiatives?
(Keep in mind how you answered question 4)
