A Place At The Table- SECOND SATURDAY BRUNCH

Food To Cure What Ails You: When Cookbooks Treated Meals As Medicine

Browse through some turn-of-the-century American cookbooks, and it's obvious that popular tastes have changed (such as the presence of fried cornmeal mush and the absence of cilantro). But more striking than the shift in flavors and ingredients is the focus on feeding those who are sick — or, to use the parlance of the time, "cooking for invalids."

Bitter Southerner Summer Reading List

So far, it’s been a whirlwind of a year.
woman.png
Scanning the news these days feels like trying to follow a Tom Clancy plot. We cannot, of course, stick our heads in the sand, because we care too greatly about what’s going on in the world. But we do have a suggestion as you head into the summer:
Don’t forget to read other things. Like this summer’s crop of great Southern books.
Every year, our recommendations come from the BS staff and a few of our brilliant, thoughtful, and forever well-read friends at indie bookstores around the South. This year, we checked in with A Cappella Books in Atlanta, Avid Bookshop in Athens, Georgia, Octavia Books in New Orleans, and Parnassus Books in Nashville. Just like always, the South’s most beloved independent shop owners generously offer up what’s new, what’s coming, and which titles they consider must-read

Family Promises of Wake County Work Study Position- 2017-18 School Year

Each year in Wake County, 4,000 individuals experience homelessness, including 2,700 children in Wake County schools who do not have a place to call home. Family Promise of Wake County is working to bring those numbers down to zero.
Since 1993, Family Promise has provided services to more than 1,250 Wake County families.  With the expertise of our full-time staff of social workers, assistance from more than 2,000 volunteers and support from more than 50 partner congregations, we help families regain their independence through shelter, meals, case management and educational services.
Family Promise's mission is to transform the lives of families experiencing temporary homelessness by helping them find support services and safe, affordable, permanent housing in our community.
For the 2017-18 school year Family Promises has a need for a weekend supervisor.
The weekend supervisor currently has 3 shifts on Saturday and 2 on Sunday.  While here the person acts as a receptionist in the foyer of our building.  They are provided with training and information materials so they know what to do.
Shifts on Saturday run 8:30-11:30, 11:30-2:30 and 2:30-5:30 and on Sunday from 7:45-12:30 and 12:30 to 5:30.  Sometimes our families are out running errands, working or visiting family and friends, but it is helpful to have someone in the building when they are not.
This would be a great position for a work study student. You would be interacting with guests and those in need of services.
